Getting down & muddy @ Southdown Farm, Keyser

Worktime on the eeepc'sWe got a little lost finding Southdown Farm, where we were setting up the 3man tent for the night. We decided that as it was just one night there, it wasn’t worth setting up the big tent. While driving around we got to have a look at the cute little village of Keyser, and found a supermarket. I didn’t have a pillow, so had visions of returning after we set up the tent to buy one. We also didn’t have any food at this point, so we made note of where it was to return to stock up on a few supplies.

In Da House … Staines & Windsor Castle

Queen Victoria and Windsor CastleSo much for summer, another wet day ahead. Chosing clothes to wear has become a bit of a nightmare, as one of the reasons I chose to come in the summer was less weight in clothes. As you’ve already noticed, I had enough problems packing as it was, without the extra burden of winter clothes. Trouble was, that like Canada everything was internally heated, so that while inside you broiled & then outside you were soaked. Lucky for me Paul had an extra anarak, unlucky for me was having to put it on & take it off on numerous ocassions. Eventually I tired of this exercise & elected to just get wet.

PiP PiP & tally ho … off we go to the Big smoke!

Well here we are the first day of my journey & it’s time to hit London! I was quite surprised that I didn’t feel any jet lag effects, but as I had kept UK time sleeping habits for so long might have contributed to that. None the less, it was still a little hard to not want to stay horizontal after such a long flight.

Picadillly TubeToday’s trip into London was via the “Tube” (otherwise known as the “Underground”). If you have ever been on a rollercoaster, you will find this similar. It’s a tad archaic in appearance, looking quite possibly like it hadn’t changed over the years it had been in existance. It rocked back & forwards & swung around corners making one feel like they were on an amusement ride.

Half the fun is getting there? Lies, lies, lies!

Emerites AirlineI must say that Emirates is all they say & more. By far it is the most luxurious & well services airline with a compliment of pleasant staff members. The food was excellent & there was plenty of it.

As with all long flights you sit & count the hours waiting for the time when you can feel your extremities again. One of the precautions I took was to wear pressure sox that will reduce any cramping while I sat, and made sure that I stretched my legs every couple of hours.

Chosing the right seating seems to be the hardest part of the battle for a pleasant flight. Do I want the window seat where I can get a view & somewhere to rest my head? Do I want to struggle past 1-2 passengers seated next to me to get out to stretch my legs? Or do I want an aisle seat? An aisle seat will be easy to move around from, but then you suffer the endless hits in the head from passengers walking past with bags & babies. It seems there is no “good” seat unless you are willing to fork out the extra money for first or business class.

If it don’t fit…force it! Just don’t weigh it!!

eeepcIt’s final repack time, or at least I thought! Out half of it comes again to fit everything that I missed the first time round. Clothes you would think? I wish! Clothes are in very short supply & black seems to be the theme of the journey as it will show the least dirt & I will be able to have more than one dance per outfit. Why you say? There just wasn’t room for clothes!

Camping equipment slowly made it’s way out of my backpack in favour of leads, leads & more leads! One of the pitfalls of the mobile office is that you have to take into account the different countries power supplies, and that means that many many leads are required. There have been some intuitive hardware developers that have provided multi-adapter power paks, but unfortunately not enough.
