In Da House … Staines & Windsor Castle

Queen Victoria and Windsor CastleSo much for summer, another wet day ahead. Chosing clothes to wear has become a bit of a nightmare, as one of the reasons I chose to come in the summer was less weight in clothes. As you’ve already noticed, I had enough problems packing as it was, without the extra burden of winter clothes. Trouble was, that like Canada everything was internally heated, so that while inside you broiled & then outside you were soaked. Lucky for me Paul had an extra anarak, unlucky for me was having to put it on & take it off on numerous ocassions. Eventually I tired of this exercise & elected to just get wet.

Windsor Castle takes up most of the town & is quite forminable. We had a nice stroll down the main street in what was left of the sunshine for the day. I had to make some important pitstops to get prepaid mobile broadband access & an air mattress to replace the one I had to leave behind due to weight issues at the airport.

We stopped in at Mark & Spencers to grab something to eat (I had a nice fruit salad & a bottle of water), then sat at one of the park benches outside the Castle. No sooner had we started eating than it started to pour with rain. There wasn’t much pointing moving because there was no where to move to, so we decided to just sit there in the rain eating our lunch.

After eating we ventured up to the castle to see how much it was to take the tour, but due to budget limitations as that time I decided it was too much. There were many more castles on my agenda to visit that I preferred to keep my money for. We did, however, have a walk around the exterior of the castle to it’s parklands. We also had a look in a quaint church that had many old headstones. One of the headstones noted the LODGE residence, and war memorial noted the name OTTWAY, both descedents of the era (photos take of each).

By this time it was pouring!! I was drenched. But what the hell, onwards we went. At some stage we took a wrong turn & ended up having to walk up this steep hill to make our way back, and trust me… after an exhausting couple of days I was pooped! Not to mention the sauna like effect that the rain jacket was providing. I didn’t think to buy an umbrella at this stage as Paul had said it was unusual weather for this time of year, so I figured it wouldn’t be worth it.

Finally back to the car & I could hardly wait to change into dryer clothing. However, there was too many people around to change in front of, so it was dry off with the car heater.

By the way, this area also contained the burrow of Staines. In case there are some of you that haven’t seen the movie before, it was where Ali G in the House was featured around (one of my favourite films!).

Next stop… Southdown Farm in Keyser, just outside Brighton.

It rained all the way there!
